This title, published in 2006, is actually a revision of an earlier novel, The Naked Twilight.

Newcomer to the El Paso Border Patrol station, Rodney Capers, finds himself assigned with a group of mavericks who, though unorthodox, are effective in bringing to justice some hard-core criminals often ignored by a bureaucracy more interested in numbers than quality. The mavericks, called SLIBS, each select a special "project," a euphemistic expression for individual troublemakers they wish to bring to justice. Rodney chose a cat burglar that had terrorized a lower El Paso neighborhood in an otherwise boring stretch of border.
