An unhappy California teenager, Corbie Ransom, is uprooted and transplanted in a small West Texas town.  His father was frequently transferred and although Corbie had lived in several cities, as a teenager, the transfers seemed to be more difficult.  In his new home town, Marfa, Texas, he quickly gets into a conflict with a bully in a rivalry over a pretty, local girl.  Corbie finds his valor challenged by the bully and his gang and lets them goad him into spending a night alone atop Mount Chinati, sometimes called "Ghost Mountain."
